PROXI Kitchen Disinfectant
Did you know: plain, hydrogen peroxide may be one of the safest and most effective things you can use to clean and kill germs in your home? Hydrogen peroxide not only kills most household germs, it doesn't give off toxic fumes and is a lot safer for the environment.  PROXI, a spray kitchen cleaner manufactured by Innovasource is at the top of my list of cleaning products for the kitchen (and other areas as well). Consisting primarily of water and hydrogen peroxide, PROXI cleans surfaces well. It doesn't have the stronger, often irritating smell of other cleaners and it's pretty inexpensive. Read product information carefully and check with your doctor to make sure PROXI is suitable for your use. A link to Innovasource follows; the company sells other products including personal products, but I haven't tried them yet.

Green Way Eco-Friendly All Purpose Cleaner (Lemongrass)
Part of a "green" line of products sold at A&P supermarkets. It cleans pretty well, but doesn't promise to kill germs like the Seventh Generation brand. Green Way does state that is is non-toxic, biodegradable and safe for septic systems. Like other botanical cleaners, it has a strong botanical smell. Aside from some general articles, I've been unable to find any real data on the Green Way line of products, even at A&P's site. If an A&P near you has the product and you're interesting in buying it, it would be wise to speak to the store manager about the cleaner beforehand, read the product label carefully, research the ingredients and confirm its safe use with your doctor, particularly if you suffer from any form of allergy.

Seveth Generation Multi-Surface Cleaner
Seventh Generation manufactures a range of cleaning products that are touted as eco friendly.  My choice is the Disinfecting Multi-Surface Cleaner. The packaging states it can kill 99.99% of germs botanically including: Influenza A, H1N1, Rhinovirus, (type 37 the Common Cold), Salmonella and more. With a lemongrass fragrance, the product cleans quite well but also has a strong, botanical fragrance. When considering the use of any new product, it's always wise to read product labels and research ingredients beforehand. Important: If you suffer from any allergies (including seasonal allergies) you should check with your doctor before using this product to ensure known allergens are not included.

When cleaning with ANY product it is wise to::

• ALWAYS wear latex gloves (or other non-porous gloves). Any product that comes in contact with your skin will be absorbed through your pores. From there, it enters your bloodstream.

• ALWAYS open windows when spraying any and all aerosols, spray cleaners, disinfectants and other air-borne products. When possible, spray the cleaner, leave the room briefly and close the door. This may help minimize the amount of the product (and potentially harmful chemicals) entering your lungs. And bloodstream.

• WEAR a dust mask when using powdered cleaners and bathroom cleanser. Wear a fumigation mask when spraying other types of chemicals. Allow the dust to settle and fumes to dissipate before you begin cleaning. This will help prevent breathing particles of the cleaner or cleanser.

• AVOID prolonged contact with fumes, dust, etc. If a cleaning product gets on your skin or clothes, wash it off immediately and change clothes if necessary.

Why Go Eco-Friendly?

Eco-friendly products may be less harmful for you and the environment.  They may be free of known carcinogens and smell more pleasant.  Be aware however, that even "green" products (herbal, botanical, organic, etc) can be harmful (or even fatal) if used improperly, or if you suffer from respiratory ailments and allergies.  Always heed manufacturer's warnings and instructions for use. Check with your doctor or health care professional to ensure any new product you plan to try is safe for you.
